1. Who first wrote about Rudolph the red-nose reindeer?
Robert May first revealed Rudolph's story to the world in a book written for the Montgomery Ward department store chain. (Rudolph has always thought of him as a bit of a father figure!).
2. By what name do most people know the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" today?
The poem formed the basis for much of what we know about present day Santa. The story is that Moore was out shopping for a turkey and was inspired by the sound of the horses drawing his sleigh and the driver. He composed the poem in his head and read it to his family the next day.
3. What is Santa called in France?
Père Noël translates literally to "Father Christmas", Santa's name in the British Isles.
4. Which of the following explains why early Americans so eagerly adopted the Saint Nicholas figure from Dutch settlers?
St. Nicholas' Dutch, and thus, anti-British origins, made him a bit of a rebel in New York, which suited the newly independent residents just fine.
5. Saint Nicholas has been an outlaw many times through the ages. Which of the following did NOT ban him?
Saint Nicholas was first outlawed by Martin Luther in 1545. Christmas (and by extension Santa Claus) was banned by the English Parliament in 1644. In Massachusetts, Christmas was not made a legal holiday again until 1856, 200 years later! It wasn't until the Victorian age that Christmas as we know it really began.
